낯선 숲 

 

“보이는 부분을 통해 보이지 않는 전체를 생각한다.”

 

나는 세상의 일부이며, 내가 없다고 세상이 어찌 되지는 않겠지만 내가 없는 세상은 나에겐 아무런 의미가 없다.

사람이 사회를 이루며 사는 데에는 소통이 중요하다. 개별화, 분업화, 전문화가 심화된 사회일수록 구성원 간의 상호의존 관계가

불가피하며 누구도 독자적인 생존은 불가능하다.

세상에 참여하고 싶고 주목 받고 싶은 나는, 세상 구조의 복잡함과 가치의 유동성으로 인한 혼란스럽고 불안한 마음을 달래려 숲을

찾는다. 숲은 이름 모를 수많은 생명들로 가득한데 나에겐 심신의 피로를 덜 수 있는 장소이다. 어느 순간 식물들도 빛과 양분을 차지하기

위해 경쟁한다는 사실을 인식하고 성공을 위해, 생존을 위해 몰려든 수많은 사람들 사이에 서 있는 나를 떠올린다. 또한 자기 처지에 맞게

환경에 맞서거나 순응하며 성장해온 식물들의 잎들이 만들어낸 개별적이지만 하나로 연결된 유기적인 구조 (Fractal)의 아름다움을

발견하고 내가 속한 세상의 구조에 대하여 생각한다. 숲에서 발견한 것, 아니 숲이 내게 보여준 것은 식물들의 생존을 위해 경쟁과 협동을

하며 만들어낸 아름다운 구조이다. 이 아름다운 구조는 유기적인 질서 속에서 이루어지며 개별적인 단위들 모두의 노력에 의해 완성된다.

내가 살아가는 사회에서도 구성원 간 경쟁과 협동은 사회발전의 원동력이며 불가분의 관계이다. 때로는 경쟁하고 때로는 의존하게

되는데 이는 구성원 간 상호신뢰가 전제되어야 가능하며, 그런 터 위에서만 경쟁과 협동의 결과에도 동의할 수 있다. 상호신뢰는

구성원 간 합의로 만들어진 유기적인 질서를 지키는 사회 구성원 모두의 자발적인 노력에 의해 완성된다.

자연과의 존재론적 만남

권오열의 작업은 한 마디로 자연은 자연대로 보여줄 것을 다 보여주고, 사진(작가)은 사진(작가)이 본 것을 아무런 미적 꾸밈없이 할 수

있는 한 정직하게 보여준 작업이라고 할 수 있다. 그의 사진은 너무나 정직해서 오히려 그것이 사진임을 잊어버리게 한다. 여백이나

배경이 사라진 그의 사진들은 나뭇잎으로만 가득 차 있고 우리의 몸을 자연안으로 빨려 들어가기 직전으로 이동시킨다. 마치 잭슨폴록의

올 오버 페인팅(all over painting)이 전해 주는 존재론적 각성처럼 그의 사진은 아름답다든지 잘 찍었다든지 하는 생각을 없애버리고

그냥 그것과 마주하고 있다는 생각만을 하게 한다. 나는 그가 자연의 유기적 관계와 인간의 사회적 관계를 연결 시켜 생각하는 방식으로

그의 작품을 읽고 싶지 않다. 그가 한 장의 사진을 얻기 위해서 벌이는 힘겨운 과정 또한 나의 주요 관심사는 아니다. 다만 권오열이

렌즈 안에 가득 찬 나뭇잎 혹은 풀잎과 딱 맞닥뜨렸을 그 순간의 느낌에 깊이 공감하며 자연의 숲 그 안으로 들어가고 싶다.

Estranged Woods 

“Through parts that are seen, I think of whole that is not seen.”

 

I am part of the world and the world will not change without me but the world without me does not mean anything to me. For people to form a society and live, communication is important. As it is a society where individualization, specialization, professionalization are deepened, interdependent relationship between members is inevitable and independent survival is impossible for anyone.

I, who wish to participate and get attention in the world, turn to forests to soothe my mind that is confused and unstable due to the complexity of worldly structure and liquidity of values.

Forests are full of various nameless lives and is a place where I can rest up my tiring body. After suddenly realizing that plants compete with each other to get light and nutrition, I recall myself to be standing in the middle of various people who flocked for success and survival. Also, I think of the structure of the world that I belong to, after discovering the beauty of the organic fractal that the leaves of plants which confronted or adapted to the environment according to their circumstances that are individualistic but connected as one. What I found in forests is what forests have shown me that is a beautiful structure which plants created through competing and cooperating for survival. This beautiful structure is done inside an organic order and it is completed by all effort of individual unit. In the society that I live, competition and cooperation.

“The work of Kwon, Oh-yeol in one word is, nature shows everything on it’s on and photograph (artist) shows what photograph (artist) saw as honest as possible, without any artistic decoration. His photographs are too honest which makes us forget that it is a photograph. His photographs, where empty space or background is gone, are filled with leaves and those move our body to the moment right before being pulled inside to the nature. Similar to the ontological awakening which Jackson Pollack’s all over painting delivers, his photographs remove the thought whether it is beautiful or taken well and make us only think that we are just facing it.

I do not wish to read his work through the method which he relates and thinks of nature’s organic relationship and human’s social relationship. The burdensome effort that he displays to get each photograph also is not of my main interest. I only would like to deeply sympathize the feeling of the moment when Kwon, Oh-yeol faced the leaf of a tree or a plant fully inside his lens and get inside the forest of nature.“
