I currently live, work and teach in Seoul, before that I lived in London for 15 years. My current practice evolved from using found objects. I use whatever is at hand to discover its usages and functions in the contemporary visual culture. Often with animations derived from manipulating some objects. So I have made installations using Korean display systems combining them with modernist references or simple everyday items like Korean chopsticks. Even the rather aspirational names of Korean cars became subject of my investigations. A substantial part of my practice is also drawing and cartoons which I find are an ideal tool to consider the possibilities of objects and sometimes I combine those. Often my installations are related to some more formal academic research like the one on nature landscape and tradition, which I pursued at a residency at Middlesex University, where also held seminars and lectures on some aspects of these subjects. One such object of the visual culture if found here in Korea are practices of growing vegetables, which I have been documenting. The 'landscape' and nature has a very different meaning here than in Europe, however, it is equally laden with history and ideology. This ultimately defines my interest in art and nature at the moment and I am exploring the underlying assumptions of 'nature in the understanding of landscape and tradition. For this reason I would be keen to experience the 'nature' environment and foraging for the materials with which to operate. Such conditions could shed light on the underlying differences between nature and culture (or the nature of culture) – a longstanding opposition in European thinking.
