Fred Martin was born in 1969. He lives in Lille and works all over the world.

A graduate of Fine Arts studies in École des Beaux Arts in Tourcoing, France and at the University of Lille, Martin practices sculpture, photography, performance, drawing and engraving.

 

After a long, obligatory stay in the cages of a zoo (where he was doing civil service work), he escapes and loses himself in the wilderness of Canada and Alaska, later settling down during more than two years in south of India. Since then, he has never ceased travelling throughout the world in order to create his installations and sculptures in-situ and to continue his ceaseless search to discover the impact of time and nature on his artistic creations책갈피 삽입/변경.

 

Working with the trace of my body, the imprint, with the symbol of what has been and what is no more, with something which evolves through time; life, death, disappearance, memory.

My work starts with the imprint, whether by leaving the shape of my body lying on the ground or by inviting the public to leave an imprint themselves in the earth.

This process is centered on what has always been a fascination for me.

In this apparent simplicity, I decided to give to the trace a place to exist and to reveal itself by giving it body, or more precisely, form.

 

“I do belong to the earth, but I am not the earth, I am becoming earth.

I walk over it, I go through it, I penetrate it,

I try to reveal some of its essence, to find myself in the soil through the imprint, by leaving a part of myself. The product of two different elements that are originally deeply linked together, earth and man, the imprint renews their connection.

It is through a symbolic work of linkage between myself, others, and the earth,

that the trace left and the image created enable me to represent (and to present anew) the connection which once was,

to represent the initial encounter, the primal contact, the original feeling between earth and man.”
