녹색초대 Invited Green 1

미술관으로 들어온 온실에서 지난봄 싹을 틔울 수 없었던 흙속의 씨들과의 예기치 않은 만남을 시도한다. 나는 돌 아래 흙을 화분에 담아 오랜 시간 빛을 보지 못해 자라지 못했던 씨들이 세상에 고개를 내밀고 사람들과 만나게 한다. 씨앗 속에 내재적 생명력이 생태적 성장을 해가는 과정이 작품이 된다. 이 작업을 통해 세상에 존재하는 보이지 않는 작은 생명의 가능성에 대하여 생각한다.

Having a greenhouse in a museum I tried to create an unexpected meeting with a seed in soil which could not sprout the previous spring. To do this, I collected soil from under stones and put it into pots. I then displayed them in order to let people can see what seeds were sprouting and growing. However, most could not grow since they could not receive light for a long time. The latent potential within the seeds and the process of ecological growth become artwork itself. I only hope that focusing on the possibility of what the smallest natural elements can become could help others to appreciate possibilities which I cannot yet imagine.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

녹색초대 Invited Green

철재로 만든 십자형의 화단에 수원의 도심의 4대문 근처의 도로변에서 채취한 흙을 담고 시멘트로 덮은 다음 구멍을 뚫어 식물의 씨가 발아하여 자라 오르기를 기다린다.

여기서 콘크리트는 문명화된 도시의 상징이며, 흙속의 이름 모를 씨앗은 자연계의 모든 생명을 대변한다. 나는 거리의 보이지 않는 씨들을 수집하여 발아시키는 과정을 통해 절망적인 생태계의 불균형상황을 자초한 인간이 미래의 인간과 자연의 희망적인 상황을 만들어낼 수 있는 존재임을 이야기한다.

 

I collected soil from along a road nearby four old gates in the city of Suwon, South Korea. I then put the dirt into a cross-shaped steel container, covered it with cement and then cut out circular shapes from the hardened mixtue. I then waited to see which seeds (if any) would sprout in the holes I provided.

In my work, concrete is a ubiquitous material in modern civilization and the growing unknown plant is a symbolic life; an element of the natural world. We human beings have created a self-inflicted imbalance within the natural world. However, through the process of sprouting invisible seeds from the street, I aim to show that man is the only creature capable of recovering a sustainable world.
